Southampton is not usually forthcoming on Christmas lights as much as other cities – What with the Christmas market and so many lights from shops, ships and offices – But, to open up a leisure area for Christmas at West Quay malls this year, a stunning loop of 7-minute, light and sound illuminations ran on our Old Town Wall at the weekend.
Depicted, was the history of Southampton’s port, which focused on departures of: Henry V troops leaving for Agincourt, The Mayflower with Pilgrims preparing for America, The Titanic leaving for New York, boats and planes in WW2 manoeuvres, J-Class yachts, powerboats, hovercraft, container-ships and so on.
Do you have any festive lights where you are?
Excellent!!! I like it. That’s the way Christmas decorations are going now SOL. A neighbour of mine has a light show over the front of his house this year. One small projector creates all sorts of coloured swirls and star patterns over the front of his house. It won’t be long before people will install sound systems at the front of their houses and project their holiday snaps across the front of their houses, with music or voice comentaries!! Ha! Ha! Just imagine it. The HORROR!!!!!

Stunning, Sol. I wonder if you saw my two Knighton Park posts last Christmas. https://derrickjknight.com/2016/01/02/knighton-park-revisited/ They do this every year

Those pictures are fabulous! Ask Jackie if she ever went to see the lights in Fairlie Park when she stayed in Ringwood

No. Maybe we should find them. Thanks a lot

I drove through Botley last night and their lights are very sweet. They’re all white. Very understated. A bit like Botley itself.

Great photos. My experience seems to be that there are fewer illuminations around this year. Post Brexit gloom no doubt 😉

Its always been like that around here

You’re very lucky having lights like that. It must take a lot of work. Ours are mainly of the “chuck some random lights on a tree” school of Christmas lights. 🙂

Thank you so much for sharing your pics …interesting display as it ties in to historical and significant events. Here, mostly individual house lights some of which are really beautiful. Blessings for a good day!

The new neighbors are the only optimists with lights this year. Hopefully it will be the last year of Bah! Humbug!

Those illuminations are stunning. People here decorate their houses with coloured lights, but because the days are so long the lights don’t look impressive until around 9.30 or 10.00pm.

It gets dark at 3pm here in Southern England – why the Solstice is so popular I think.

The Winter Solstice is definitely the right time of year for lights.

Showed The Boffin your photos. He thought they were festive and quite an improvement.

The illuminations in comparison to what he remembers, of course.

I remember the shop Edwin Jones (Debenhams) used to have good ones – but the council would always see them as a waste of money normally
