It’s funny — I never am sure whether I think of ‘transmogrify’ as a positive word, or a negative. Transformation sounds more positive to me, transmogrify more negative, I suppose. But this is a perfect representation of both. I understand things can’t (won’t) stay the same, but that older view does seem more appealing to me.
All that water became reclaimed land to extend the port. Even in the older photo there was less of a view of The New Forest than in Jane Austen’s time.
Just had a look at your blog and it is wonderful. We did something similar in Spain – getting a small plot of land in Spain and growing everything from grapes to almonds – keeping ducks and quail – our best years while we were fit – here’s wishing you both lots of happiness – sorry to have missed your programme – you must visit Southampton soon, it has changed beyond recognition apart from the old town walls

This is always interesting to see such a pictures of before and after. So many of work, history and other things have changed since the past times.

I usually find it difficult to orientate myself with photographs and pictures before the land was reclaimed, but you can’t go wrong with that one.

Even in 1880 the view of the forest was diminishing – now we don’t see it at all. My father could remember the water coming up to old town walls.

So interesting to see how it’s changed over time. The modern version may work better for today’s needs, but I miss the charm of the historic version.

They had only just started the building works when we arrived nine months ago, it has been interesting seeing the changes month by month.

Yes. They used to run the cables over the road on a bridge straight onto the docks….apparently!
