I started this in August 2015, but only just completed the post
This is the first in my new series of black & white scenes photographed in colour.
In 2013, I took these photos of HMS Warrior, Britain’s first iron-hulled, armoured warship.
Launched in 1860, Warrior was the pride of Queen Victoria’s fleet. Powered by steam and sail, she was the largest, fastest and most powerful ship of her day and had a profound effect on naval architecture. Warrior was, in her time, the ultimate deterrent. Yet within a few years she was obsolete.
Restored and back at home in Portsmouth, Warrior now serves as a ship museum, monument, visitor attraction, private venue and more.

Next time we’re in West Wittering I might try to get over. Looks fabntastic.

That is just one of the ships at Portsmouth’s Historical Dockyard – Victory, Mary Rose, Ark Royal and 2 museums all in one. Best to go when there is a festival of sorts though for maximum value.

Yes. That’s the Officers Mess, the able seamen had more basic tables underneath their hammocks.

Is it wrong that I enjoyed the photographs of coiled rope more than the rest? There’s just something wonderful about lengths of rope ready for use.

It’s textures that reflect light and also they have life to them. I remember when you liked the coloured ropes in the post about Southampton Boat Show. I like the ropes around the boxes in this post best.

Great pics. I can see why you originally did them in black and white. I loved the tile in the officer;s mess. I am a fool for tile.

Lovely photos. CJ and I went down to Portsmouth a while ago and had a wander around but we didn’t actually go on board any ships. Your photos make me wish we had.

It makes a great day out when there is a festival on there. The next one is for a Burns’ Night. They used to hold the Victorious Festival here – before they started holding it at Southsea Castle.

PS. The Mary Rose museum is undergoing refurbishments until April so go after then. They have cheap vouchers online – National Rail 2-for-1, “Hampshire attractions” and Amazon plus sometimes on cereal packets.

I will bear that in mind
